Why doors give trouble in KL homes
Most door calls we get in KL trace back to the same few local causes:
- Humidity: KL sits at 70-90% humidity year-round. Timber doors drink it in and swell – the bathroom and kitchen doors go first, and during the monsoon months a door that closed fine in July starts jamming by November. Planing plus sealing the raw edge is the fix, not force.
- Heavy solid doors: the thick solid-core entrance doors in many KL condos slowly pull their hinge screws out of the frame. Re-fixing with longer screws or moving to a fresh section of frame beats replacing the whole door.
- Balcony sliding doors: dust, rain and grit end up in the bottom track; the nylon rollers wear flat and the door starts grinding. Roller sets are cheap – it’s the diagnosis and alignment that matter.
- Worn cylinders: a key that needs jiggling is a cylinder on its way out. Swapping it is quick and doesn’t mean a new lockset – and it’s much cheaper before it fails than after, locked out at night.
- Termite-damaged frames: if the frame crumbles when we probe it, that’s a termite job, not a hinge job – we’ll tell you straight and point you to a pest specialist before any repair money is wasted.

My door swelled up and won’t close. Plane it or wait for it to shrink?
Plane it. In KL’s humidity a swollen door rarely shrinks back for long – we take off just enough, then seal the planed edge so it stops absorbing moisture and jamming every rainy season.
Can you replace just the handle without changing the lock?
Usually yes. On most KL condo doors the handle set and the lock cylinder are separate parts – if the lock itself is fine, we swap only the handle and you save on parts.
My balcony sliding door is stuck. Can it be repaired without replacing it?
Almost always. Nine times out of ten it’s worn rollers or a dirty, dented track – we replace the rollers, clean and realign the track, and the door glides again. Full door replacement is the rare exception.
