In Kuala Lumpur’s hot and humid climate, air conditioners run for long hours and produce a large amount of condensation. When that moisture cannot drain properly, water starts leaking from the indoor unit—often dripping onto walls, floors, or furniture.
A leaking aircon should never be ignored. What starts as a small drip can quickly lead to ceiling damage, mould growth, electrical issues, and costly repairs. Identifying the cause early helps prevent bigger problems.
Blocked or clogged drainage pipe
Dust, algae, and sludge can build up inside the drain pipe over time. When the pipe is blocked, condensed water has nowhere to go and overflows from the indoor unit.
Dirty air filters or evaporator coil
Restricted airflow caused by dirty filters or coils can lead to ice forming on the evaporator. When the ice melts, excess water may overwhelm the drainage system and leak out.
Incorrect installation or poor unit levelling
If the indoor unit is not levelled correctly during installation, water will not flow towards the drain tray and pipe as designed. This often causes constant dripping from one side of the unit.
Damaged or cracked drain pan
The drain pan collects condensation before it enters the drainage pipe. Cracks, corrosion, or misalignment can cause water to leak even when the drain pipe itself is clear.
Low refrigerant causing coil freezing
Low refrigerant levels can cause the evaporator coil to freeze. When the ice melts, the resulting water may exceed the drain system’s capacity and leak from the unit.
When should you call an aircon technician?
Call a technician if:
- Water leaks continuously during operation
- The leak gets worse the longer the aircon runs
- You notice damp patches, stains, or mould
- The unit is also not cooling efficiently
Delaying repairs can damage your home and the air conditioning system.
